Health Minister Recep Akdağ has said the number of women who have abortions is on the rise in Turkey.
“In 2009, just over 60,000 women resorted to abortion and in 2010 the number of women was 58,186,” said Akdağ in a news report in the Milliyet daily news on Tuesday. “In 2011, the number of women who had abortions increased to 69,364.”
According to the database of the Address-Based Central Population Registration System (MERNİS), there were 1,254,946 births in 2009, but that number fell to 1,238,970 in 2010. MERNİS also shows that 51 percent of those babies were male and 49 percent were female. (Cihan/Todays Zaman)
